Most people like wood,  and there are some who love it.

I am one of  the latter. It’s warmth and variety are a continuing source

of discovery and pleasure. The craft of woodturning is an excellent way to explore wood’s beauty and natural appeal.
Woodturning is unlike most other forms of woodcraft as it can be spontaneous, much like spinning a clay pot. This is the quality I most enjoy with this craft, no huge amount of preplanning, just a general idea in mind of the final outcome. Although I’m in admiration of the turners who segment hundreds of pieces for their creation, I do not have the patience for such.
There can also be a meditative quality to this craft, a “centering” perhaps. As concentration on the revolving object can be intense as well as lengthy, the sounds, smells and visualizations can provide a comfortable Zen like experience. I believe it is these qualities that make this craft somewhat addicting.
Although woodturning lathes can cost thousands, a basic machine and necessary turning chisels can be purchased for a few hundred . It does not take a superior machine to create superior work, it just makes it a bit easier. Up until recently most of my work was done on an old 4 speed Rockwell. I don’t own any manufactured chucks and opt for home made ones.
I hope my work interests some and influences others to try

this ever evolving craft. I am always pleased to answer questions

and comments about my work or turning in general.
